Stephen Martindale IV

(father)

Stephen Martindale IV was born in La Crosse in 1859, son to Stephen Martindale III and Katharine Howard. The Martindales, as many Yankee families, left Vermont and moved to Wisconsin in the mid 19th century. Stephen IV attended Beloit College and studied law at UW Madison. After a very brief stint in law in La Crosse, he joined his father's insurance business and later became an agent for Northwestern Mutual Life in La Crosse. Stephen IV married Sophie Rosenblatt from Beloit, and together they started their own family of three children: Henrietta, Katharine, and Stephen V. Stephen's letters reveal a devoted, kind, generous and loving father, always ready to do whatever he could for his family. He died suddenly from a heart attack in October 1923, leaving behind a devastated and broken family, heavily in debt.

Anna Martindale (aunt)

Anna, sister to Stephen IV, was born in La Crosse in 1857, attended Wellesley College near Boston in the late 1880's, art at the Academy of Design in New York City, and after a brief time in New Orleans, moved to the Los Angeles area where she lived until her death in 1937. She never married, and Henrietta was her sole heir. Anna has a presence in this story because of her role as confident to Henrietta, who fled to Anna's side to live out the last few months of her secret pregnancy. Bonno was born in Glendale, CA and Anna's letters back home to La Crosse during this time never reveal a thing about Henrietta's illegitimate daughter. Anna plays along with the "official story" that Henrietta is resting and planning her future business venture.
