Stephen Martindale V

Independent, Adventurous,
Unsettled, Enigmatic

1893

Stephen V is born in La Crosse, the youngest of three and only son of Stephen IV.

1913

Stephen V graduates from La Crosse Central High School, and heads for college at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. Letters to his mother Sophie and to his sisters Henrietta and Katharine show a restless young man, not interested in studies, but rather adventure. For his senior year, Stephen transfers to the U of MI in Ann Arbor, but leaves before the end to drive an ambulance during WWI, and joins the American Relief Administration, traveling far and wide in Europe and Russia.

1924

Stephen returns briefly to La Crosse to help Katharine settle their father's estate. He is restless, hesitates to return to La Crosse and tells Katharine that he doesn't want to spend the rest of his life selling insurance. Letters between other family members refer to Stephen as someone who does not keep in contact with his family, never writing nor visiting. Katharine writes to him disapprovingly in many letters because he is not living up to her standards.

Stephen marries at least twice and has two children, a son (Stephen VI) and daughter (Margaret).

1949

Stephen, now living in La Crosse, puts an end to his own life by putting a bullet through his head.
